About

Oxfam (a charity organization focused on alleviating global poverty) launched the UnBlocked Cash Project to help deliver aid with the use of e-voucher “tap-and-pay” cards linked to the blockchain. The first pilot — through a partnership with Sempo and ConsenSys — launched successfully in Vanuatu after Tropical Cyclone Harold.

Building Blocks Project

Created by the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), Building Blocks (BB) is a permissioned, blockchain network that connects humanitarian organizations to streamline communication and aid disbursement. BB has already been used for helping Ukraine during the war, Syrian refugees in Jordan, citizens of Bangladesh, and residents of Beirut during the 2020 explosion.

Health Heroes Program

The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela partnered with Circle, Airtm (a fintech company), and the US government to distribute $18 million USD in US-seized funds from the Maduro dictatorship to front-line medical workers.

Stellar Aid Assist

The United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UN refugee agency) and the International Rescue Committee (a New York-based international humanitarian aid organization) - through two separate pilots - partnered with the Stellar Development Foundation, MoneyGram, and Circle to deliver USDC to displaced Ukrainian refugees through Stellar’s Aid Assist program.

UkraineDAO

Ukraine DAO auctioned off a Ukrainian flag NFT for $6.75 million, which it donated to Ukrainian government and Army.

Umoja Labs

Emerging Impact (an organization that helps aid agencies and financial service providers modernize their financial services in emerging countries) created the Umoja platform to distribute cash assistance using blockchain technology. This partnership produced two pilots with Care International in Ecuador (an organization fighting poverty) and Hope for Haiti (an organization that aims to improve the quality of life for Haitian people). Both pilots target improving access to healthcare and services.
